The United States indicated at the meeting of the UN Security Council that for the safety of the ZNPP, it is necessary to withdraw Russian troops from there, create a demilitarized zone there and ensure the access of IAEA experts. This was stated by US Deputy Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins at a meeting of the UN Security Council, writes Ukrinform.
“The United States calls on the Russian Federation to immediately withdraw its forces from Ukrainian territory. This will allow Ukraine to restore the exceptional security and guarantees it has maintained for decades at the facility. Russia created its own risks by launching a full-scale invasion, and it can eliminate those risks right now if it withdraws from Ukraine,” Jenkins said.
The US pointed to the importance of facilitating access for IAEA personnel to address nuclear safety and safeguards issues at the Zaporizhzhia facility, as well as at other nuclear facilities throughout the country.
“The USA also supports Ukraine’s proposal to create a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhzhia station. The reports, including the IAEA, which we heard today, emphasize the urgency of the situation,” the US representative emphasized.
In addition, according to Jenkins, the accusations by the Kremlin of the Ukrainian side in the attacks on the nuclear power plant are aimed at forcing others to ignore the fact that Russian forces are illegally present at the facility.
